A5S major Z axis failure

Five hours into an otherwise successful print, the hot end was raised about 10mm and then sank into the print. It buried itself about 1/3 of the way, melting everything in its path. I have never seen a failure like this before. I just happened to be watching it at the time, or the results might have been much worse.

Any thoughts on this one?

@Razai - gee, that's pretty bizarre! If you reprint the same file (maybe try with filament unloaded....) , do you get the same results? Which firmware, and were you printing from SD or via USB cable?

Always from an SD card. Same firmware setup as always. The machine has over 1000 successful hours on it. I have had to nurse it along recently as it has shown other normal signs of aging, but this one baffles me. I don’t plan on running this particular print again any time soon, and I now don’t trust the printer unless I can sit right next to it. If I hadn’t been there, that would have been a real fire hazard.
